External Email - Use Caution Let me just add, the tar archive listed in your email, freesurfer-linux-ubuntu20_x86_64-7-dev.tar.gz, is the install image (and not the source code) from a *development* nightly build on Ubuntu 20 which has not been tested like a freesurfer release. So if you are looking to start using freesurfer commands and binaries that are already built and organized as a distribution (from either the tar file or the installer files), then you should consider using the existing, stable 7.2.0 release (which you can get from https://secure-web.cisco.com/1_rhmCsv6clReJC6U3u5VnsAa0yDplUEXxuvkaSSMF4KO1ylYyna8-Y8W3CMLbzWRhfjizfi2fu9kWf6QscpHqJRx36iHjuHh4BGWbNsKDQdw_BlQK-puAFAEWEzccc0LayfQjc2elkF181Q4aup3z-llbRYetnzXI13_4XUp7dg5BKfmjj9Kil6bNcSole7PicYUR4tXm1USvr87k-2e6-ZZ9TxK5_waStGkbFCTRmI1RsYSy_E2d-Hx46xmRLFvkxCSDh5UiUSLHGT8QlLKHB5TwY45---ZrM3UeA9QaQbmn3jVWuF2YUIZLMxh0D6eSTrwvflusnihL0PJ-a46Ow/https%3A%2F%2Fsurfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu%2Ffswiki%2Frel7downloads). The 7.2.0 release does have Ubuntu 18 binaries and an installer available via the link above. I believe those binaries should run on Ubuntu 20. Installed images of freesurfer (including Ubuntu 18 binaries) are available in various system images including a container, a VM, and also you can run it under the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). We have some info about that here if you just want to get started trying the commands, https://secure-web.cisco.com/1IqL_pExkd0h4Ll0hp7UdgBqalAfNpwUZ72slcc_awFo-Ka8n201_i9hUFiccygrDk_cAAlEmlT_xAluEK5OLKZc_AjnytLnXh5jQCjgbpVJE6R-JTSVvph-EK08_DQklXNHBw-YcMJTuoBEPoKQF-bbQdrsa5UDB0r6wNU9_FUz6SwzHfC4Zdav0vbR3z3dgnfpG17j-1HHmoeRWyFV-KZDg5SI0ehgVaJt8Y_0kfJJ1FYqH4iPc43MQHpKuDwd-95O1Ee-mfL6MV61uUhVHMy0AFE1_GUE34zKWRXtrmQraaHMCcm6Q1bxKCh_UAmsW9Xv-I6aWAolmHWTofzKV3A/https%3A%2F%2Fsurfer.nmr..mgh.harvard.edu%2Ffswiki%2FVM_67, https://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/fswiki//FS7_wsl - R.
