As an aid to those who are interested in hearing their own speech
encoded/decoded by Codec2, I've written a Windows-based demonstration
program:

http://code.google.com/p/codec2demo/

Using the soundcard(s) on the PC, it allows one to speak into a
microphone and hear the result in real-time via the speakers.

One can turn Codec2 on and off to allow a comparison of the codec with
uncompressed audio.

Note that using a headset / handset is prudent, as sound feedback may
result if the speaker feeds directly into the microphone.

Because of the export issues raised previously, I'm bundling a version
of Codec2 Revision 289 (which is 2500bps only). The included Revision
289 Codec2 code has been tweaked to use the same API calls as Revision
310 (which supports both 1400 and 2500).

The demo program is compiled with MinGW (which is available under both
Windows and Linux). In addition to running under Windows, it seems to
work just fine under Wine under Linux. Your mileage may vary.

Any volume adjustments (both "Playback" and "Record") must be made via
the normal Windows method (e.g. double-click the speaker symbol in the
bottom right corner of the screen).

Please don't ask about a Linux/MacOS/Amiga/Android etc. version; the
source code is provided, so someone else is welcome to create their
own tool.

Usage is:

Run the program
Select the Input and Output soundcard devices of choice
Press the Start button
Adjust the Windows volume controls to suit
Listen to the results as one chooses between uncompressed and Codec2
Press the Stop button when finished
