I have tested it, and it seems to run fine. I am still using a "not soo good" headset, I will buy a new one shortly, but with the old headset, I get comparable quality listening to my own voice regardless of whether codec2 is in the loop.
A few points. There is a very slight ring to the sound when using Codec2 Low frequencies, or "room" are attenuated in codec2, there is a "presense" tone to direct speech, that is missing in codec2. This is not a disadvantage. It is a bit of a problem listening to one self in a headset, due to the sound that is transmitted in the cheek-bone, so I should guess other experiments will reveal other things. A very interesting demo the sound quality at 2550 is impressive, especially since I have listened in to several D-star conversations that are available on the web. I do not think codec2 has anything to learn from AMBE, both have some slight "robotlike" characteristics, but to me AMBE does NOT sound better even with 2400 bps vs. codec2 at 1400, and "rings" a bit more.
