When David is finished with his head-down mode and can cut over to using
cmake (which I hope is soon), we would in general feel free to make
changes that break the autotools build and don't break the cmake build
because the developers would only be modifying one and not the other.
You can't really expect it to keep working unless you are willing to put
in the time to follow changes and keep it up with them.
