Here are some thoughts off the top of my head for desired features for the TV recording:

1) With my G400-TV, I don't think I'll be able to record live TV while watching pre-recorded TV or film with MPlayer, because of a hardware limitation (the Backend scaler, or YUV->RGB conversion or something can only be used by one of the above at a time).

Anyway, similar problems will occur if the user is watching Live TV and a recording starts. Some framework to model both of the above limitations in hardware would be good, so that conflicts can be handled by the UI in a nice way.

(I'm thinking of showing the user dialogs that say things like "The TV recorder is scheduled to record X, starting in five minutes. Your hardware doesn't allow you to watch films while recording from TV. Would you like to: A) Cancel the scheduled recording and continue watching the film, B) Stop watching the film, and watch the TV program instead, C) Stop watching the film).

2) Specify for instance that I want at all times, say, the latest CNN newscast recorded, but that the system doesn't have to keep old copies.

3) Background, low priority transcoding from mjpeg to mpg format to save disk space.
