Hehe, feelings do indeed differ.. ;-) I think it uses too few keys. :-)
Basically, I think your approach is right, it should be manageable with only a minimum amount of keys (and those should be explicitly decided on and used throughout freevo), however I think too many of my IR's keys are unused most of the time. Especially the playback control keys should work for the detached audio player, and it should be possible to associate "screens" (Freevo modules/navigation positions) with user-defined buttons, so that a simple press of a key labelled "TV" jumps to the TV guide (or possibly the last watched channel). (I hate pressing up/down/enter and exit many times just for navigating between often used menu destinations like audio player vs. video collection vs. TV, especially since many of the keys are unused in the menu.)

Well, let's split it : I was taking about main menu navigation, which uses a bit too many keys.
The application control is different, I think it would be nice to allow create menu shortcuts, which may then be mapped to a specific IR button. It is not to difficult, I guess.
Controlling detached player, that's tricky. I don't see an easy way how to controll application from within a menu with menu navigation keys. Possible ways are - either you can have specific set of keys to control detached application, but different than usual navigation keys, or you need to be able to attach back to the detached application and then you can use any keys you like. BTW, is this possible with detached music player?

5. text input plugin. If we want to give users the ability to change
config directly from freevo, we need to make a text input plugin. It is
no problem with keyboard, but it may be problem with IR controllers. Is
it possible to implement similar control as with cell phones, i.e.
several presses of button changes the entered value.

This is one possibility, another would be to have "letter-wheels" as in those public game automatons, which can be navigated with only up/down keys. These plugins could be both implemented with a common API, so that one can be chose depending on the IR at hand.

Agreed.
