Was there any issue in using standalone mp1e (from zapping.sf.net) to do
this? There was also another project (nvrec.sf.net) which can encode to
DiVX and nuppelvideo but I haven't been able to get their code working on
newer distros since ~2003. I haven't tried their latest (2004) release to
see if it compiles.

I'm assuming that mencoder from mplayer is not suitable due to size and/or
dependency issues.
