On my gentoo system which runs xine-lib 1.1.6 and xine-ui 0.99.5 everything is working just fine. The first run I pressed q+return and the second I press the 'stop' key on the remote. IIRC you are using X11 and not a framebuffer, which is the same as this Gentoo system. The other system has a Matrox G400 DH for testing framebuffer stuff.
