I know that freevo does not see keyboard events when xine is running,
pressing 'q'+return stops xine from the keyboard.

I wonder if there is a problem with xine versions. On my gentoo system
which runs xine-lib 1.1.6 and xine-ui 0.99.5 everything is working
just fine. Waiting for the program to exit or pressing 'stop' on the
remote or pressing 'q'+return xine exits cleanly:

- From this log it seems that xine does not use stdout but I don't think
that this is your problem.
The first run I pressed q+return and the second I press the 'stop' key
on the remote.

IIRC you are using X11 and not a framebuffer, which is the same as
this Gentoo system. The other system has a Matrox G400 DH for testing
framebuffer stuff.
