I had a similar problem with alsa, it turned out that a switch was not 
visible from alsamixer but was from amixer.

I wonder if this is something similar, if it is I solved it be running a 
small script.

 # cat audio-set
amixer cset name='IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' 0
amixer cset name='IEC958 Playback Switch' 1
