I did previously comb amixer for anything resembling digital out or
IEC958 and made sure everything was unmuted and 100%.

But the funny thing is I just tried it again, and SPDIF is working.
It's not working out of optical (even though it's lit up) but it _is_
working via the coaxial output.  The only thing I can think of is that
my hour of failed experimentation with OSS last night caused something
to change in NVRAM or firmware (assuming there is any for sound).

I'll now back away slowly and carefully from the machine and diff amixer
output from before and after to see if anything has changed.

My contingency plan does involve a new motherboard, so I'm still
interested to hear input from others.
