I myself made the plunge in August, dropping a small fortune on a
Pioneer PRO-151FD.  Watching content on my HTPC is such a night and day
difference (compared to my previous configuration consisting of an old
rear projection connected via svideo).  I now consider myself an HD
bigot, and refuse to watch content in SD if it's available in HD.

Ok, that is _weird_.  I wonder if your power is that dirty that someone
flicking a light on causes a significant voltage irregularity that your
previous sound card/chipset happened to not handle so well.  (Sounds
like a stretch, though.)  Had you tried a UPS?  Or was the problem
something completely different?
