Hi Mark, I'm afraid you're at a point where I'm not longer sure how to help; I'm not at all familiar with Gentoo... maybe it might be worthwhile to just install the microsoft corefonts and copy the file "Arial_Bold.TTF" into your skins/fonts/ directory.
