the problem was with xine trying to use the xv driver. I now installed the nvidia driver for my TNT2M64, and now it does also play DVD movies... exept for the sound... no sound yet when playing DVD's

This doesn't seem to be a freevo problem: when I lauch xine without any parameter, the result is the same. movie plays, but no sound.

even if sound does work now, reading dvd does still not work: screen gets black for 2-3 seconds, and then it returns to the freevo menu.
mplayer_stderr.log and mplayer_stdout.log don't contain any error.

It depends on a couple of things; are you using your own mplayer or a
public one? If your system lacks support for encrypted DVDs, you might
have that problem.

If you've got Xine installed you should probably check that your have
libdvdread and libdvdcss available.
