This doesn't seem to be a freevo problem: when I lauch xine without any parameter, the result is the same. movie plays, but no sound.

mplayer_stderr.log and mplayer_stdout.log don't contain any error.
It depends on a couple of things; are you using your own mplayer or a public one? If your system lacks support for encrypted DVDs, you might have that problem.
If you've got Xine installed you should probably check that your have libdvdread and libdvdcss available.
