I would use the native resolution of your LCD, otherwise I suspect things won't look very good. An XP2200 should be plenty CPU to handle a resolution of 1360x768 -- I have an XP1600+ with a Radeon 9000 pushing a 1680x1050 display without any trouble. As for settings, I use monitoraspect=16:9 in my ~/mplayer/config file and geometry = 1920x1080 in my /etc/freevo/freevo.conf file.
I'm assuming you are using a DVI, HDMI or VGA connection, if you are using NTSC or PAL tv-out it would be a very different story.
