I have the same setup and in the past have added both:

monitoraspect=16:9
aspect=16:9

to my mplayer config file and got full screen on everything.  It was very
obvious the video did not look right as the video was created from a wider
copy.  I don't mind the black borders anymore.  It only seems to be on some
videos and the picture looks proper on those.
