I suspect this is down to the key repeat timings, try changing 
LIRC_KEY_REPEAT in your local_config.py to
LIRC_KEY_REPEAT = (0.6, 0.3)

Those values seems to work for me, and if they work for other people I'll 
update freevo_config.py.
