Ah, excuse me, the BSDs have been doing that for ages, and
NetBSD¬ pkgsrc¬ even still uses patch-aa, patch-ab, ... files;
and these projects are a LITTLE larger, and there aren't
problems like these. Plus you can always document stuff if
you think it's difficult.
