This does not have any effect, since the "wlanconfig" program sets
the state of the ath0-device to accesspoint mode (aka "Master"). 

> iwconfig ath0 essid FreeWRT
> iwconfig ath0 channel 6

Finally you have to set up the wireless device, with:

 $ ifconfig ath0 up      # or e.g. with ip address: "ifconfig ath0 192.168.1.1"
