Hi Chris,

In my experience, it's Java as such that's hard to learn, it's building GUIs
with Java that's a pain. Building servlets, or any apps that just use
StandardIn and StandardOut, is perfectly straight-forward in Java. The only
possibly annoying thing is that the code has to be compiled (or
semi-compiled, or whatever), which makes the basic cycle a little more
complex than interpreted languages like Perl, Python, or even ColdFusion (a
language?).

I'd go for Java, mainly for servlets. For a real all-purpose,
multi-platform, Swiss army knife of a a language, though, I would not look
further than Perl.

On the other hand, on the recommendatiosn of the Prag Programmers, I'll
certainly be looking into Ruby.

LBB.

I've read about Ruby recently, too. I don't consider myself a hard-core
programmer (I briefly used Pascal, Ada, and Prolog back in grad school many
years ago), but I also am thinking of trying to pick up another language and
am leaning towards an OO language. Ben Forta mentioned the other night in
Austin that Java is fairly difficult to learn. Anyone have any thoughts on
how easy it would be to learn Ruby?
