You might be able to write a quick custom tag that runs through your site and
does a CFDIRECTORY on each circuit, filterng out everything except dsp_*.cfm
files. What makes things a little bit trickier is knowing how to map these back
to the appropriate fuseaction when you show your search results. For that
reason, you might want to set up a nested structure that holds circuits and
fuseactions and somehow map your search results to these too.

Actually, I'd love to hear how other people go about handling this.

Hi David,

I feel your pain. I had to come up with a similar solution here, although I
haven't yet implemented SES urls. Take a look and see if this helps:

<!--- this is the english to french flip function --->
<!--- it gets the path, then replaces francais and the circuitname with
english and the english circuitname --->
<cfset here = "#CGI.PATH_INFO#?fuseaction=#attributes.fuseaction#">
<cfset flip = #ReplaceList(#here#,
"english,electricity,energy,consumer,hr,about,news,search,archives",
"francais,electricite,energie,consommateur,rh,apropos,communiques,recherche,
archives")#>

<!--- the last link is the toggle --->

<div id="weelinks">
<a href="http://www.gov.on.ca/mbs/english/index.html";>central site</a> :
<a href="index.cfm?fuseaction=about.contact">feedback</a> :
<a href="index.cfm?fuseaction=english.search">search</a> :
<a href="index.cfm?fuseaction=search.sitemap">sitemap</a> :
<cfoutput><a href="#flip#">francais</a> </cfoutput>&nbsp;
</div>

<!--- of course this will only work if the directory structures are
identical in both english and french directories, down to the fuse level
--->

I have upgraded an app to fb3 and everything works fine, but I need to
be able to toggle languages, which are being sent as fb2 ses variables.

What I want to do is transform the ses vars to the proper fb3 format and
reload the page.

Here is what my index page looks like:

<!--- set proper language var --->
<cfif isDefined("url.l")>
<cfset session.l = "#url.l#">
<cfelse>
<cfset session.l = "f">
</cfif>

<!--- from formurl2attributes.cfm --->
<cfif isdefined("cgi.query_string") and isdefined("cgi.path_info")>
<cfparam name="cleanpathinfo" default="#cgi.path_info#">

                <cfset findindex=findnocase("index.cfm",cleanpathinfo)>

I have user it, it works really good. To get around the limitation on having
to upgrade to the full version of verity I copy the website to my
develoopment machine, do the spider, then do a replace in the results to
replace localhost with my website address.

Very good work! This is quite the application!

1. Will this work with ASP.Net?

2. Can you do a "runaction" type call with your code?

3. Can you do RSession type functionality with this code?
   This would be very cool. It would allow single login with asp & cf code.
Think about being able to itegrate ASP and CF apps into one site! You would
just need to be able to pass the url data with relocation call in a matching
.asp/.cfm index file. If the application was asp and a cfm file called it
thinking it was a ColdFusion circuit app... redirect and hit with right
extension. They could co-exist on same server with ultimate compliance!

4. If we changed the circuits file to .xml we could have a common format! We
should all agree on this after all the preaching about how easy fusedocs are
to read!

This is too cool, Alex put together Fusebox 3.0 code for ASP!

If you're an ASP shop, be sure to check this out.

<html>
One solution I have heard of, but have not tried myself, is to write a
custom tag that traverses all of the fuseactions and other key URL
variables that you want to index, and uses CFHTTP to create static HTML
pages.&nbsp; <br><br>
Then, these pages can easily be indexed by Verity.&nbsp; If you preserve
full path links when extracting the HTML, the static pages should
preserve all of your &quot;fuseaction&quot; type links, and return the
use to the dynamic site for any links you click on.&nbsp; Then, you can
run or schedule the code to run and re-index verity whenever your site
changes it's contents.<br><br>
These static pages have the addition benefit of being easily indexed by
external search engines as well.<br><br>

Hi Neil,

Good intro on FB3: Discovering Fusebox 3 with ColdFusion (Helms & Quatro-von
Tivadar)
Good in-depth on FB3: Fusebox: Developing ColdFusion Applications (Peters &
Papovich)

I have them both, they are really good. With zero knowledge on Fusebox, I
manage to build a 100% FB3 web site on my own (and with some help from my FB
friends... ;-)

There are two current titles:

Fusebox: Developing ColdFusion Applications, by myself and Nat Papovich
and
Discovering Fusebox 3, by Hal Helms and John Quarto von Tivadar

You can order 'em both at

Jeff and Nat's book. Outstanding, both for the fusebox, and for the FLiP.
Hal and John's book, while also very good, was very much targeted at fusebox
beginners, and not nearly as interesting, I thought, because I already know
fusebox.

Hal and John's book was mostly how to write fusebox, Jeff and Nat's was
equal parts why to write fusebox, how to do it, and how to leverage it to
the max. (plus FLiP).

    Jeff and Nat's book. Outstanding, both for the fusebox, and for the
FLiP. Hal and John's book, while also very good, was very much targeted at
fusebox beginners, and not nearly as interesting, I thought, because I
already know fusebox.

    Hal and John's book was mostly how to write fusebox, Jeff and Nat's was
equal parts why to write fusebox, how to do it, and how to leverage it to
the max. (plus FLiP).

      Whats the best book on Fusebox out at the moment? I have the old
Secret Agents one (pile of big typed crap, and out of date), and I am now
looking for a new one.

I am using it in a corporate intranet and things
are currently running smoothly. As long as your
architecture isn't using nested fuseactions, you
should be fine.

There are a few smaller issues besides nested
fuseactions that I plan to revise in the near
future:

1) Better cleanup of session vars. Right now
   the core file leaves off with a Transfer call.

We're running into an interesting problem here. We have a large fbx_switch file in a
subcircuit (about 75 cases--yes I know that's a lot, but bear with me). When a
fuseaction in this circuit is called, which does nothing more than output a couple of
dsp_ pages, the time (in the debut output) for the _nix core file (in 5.0) is > 1000
ms. However, if we remove cases from the fbx_switch, this time starts to drop--when
we get down to a single case in the switch, the core file processing time is < 200 ms.

What I'm confused about is, what is it that's going on in the core that would be so
affected by the number of cases in the switch? And is there anything (besides
breaking up the circuit) that can be done to reduce this problem? All input is
greatly appreciated.

All the best,

I believe that the parsing for include files is included in the parent
templates execution time. So that variance in time would be attributed to
having to parse such a large file. Someone jump in here if I'm wrong, i'm
kinda hazy on the matter.

One solution short of breaking into smaller circuits would be to have a
two-tiered switch statement, kind of like circuits, except all fuseactions
would still be within a single circuit.

Fuseactions would then become mycircuit.type_action, where in your
fbx_Switch.cfm, you'd do a switch on #listFirst(fusebox.fuseaction, "_")# to
include one of several subswitches that would use
#listLast(fusebox.fuseaction, "_")#. Kind of dirty (a la FB2 style), but if
having a single circuit is a big deal, it could work.

The other alternative would be to go to MX, because you only have to parse
pages on the first request to them.

If each FA in the circuit really is only displaying info, via includes of
dsp_ files, I'd take another approach altogether. This may be very
un-fusebox, but I do it all the time to save from writing lots of
unnecessary code, and to make maintenance of the fbx_Switch much simpler.
The idea is to use naming conventions for your dsp_ files, so that they can
be called automatically.

Here's an example:

<cfcase value="Show">
    <cfinclude template="dsp_#attributes.theFile#.cfm">
</cfcase>

Then you'd call your fuseaction as
index.cfm?fuseaction=myCircuit.Show&theFile=News_Story.  This would include
a template called dsp_News_Story.cfm.

Alternately, if you want to be able to call multiple fuseactions, but only
have to write one handler for them, you could use <cfdefaultcase>, as in:

<cfdefaultcase>
    <cftry>
        <cfinclude template="dsp_#fusebox.fuseaction#.cfm">
        <cfcatch type="MissingInclude">
            {do whatever you'd normally do in your default case here - e.g.,
log an error and send the user to your home page}
        </cfcatch>
    </cftry>
</cfdefaultcase>

Now, you can call a fuseaction like:
index.cfm?fuseaction=myCircuit.News_Story. If you need to include 2 files,
you could just use a character to divide the FA into 2 parts (e.g.,
index.cfm?fuseaction=myCircuit.News_Story|News_Story2) and then use List
functions to include two different templates. I'm not sure how FB purists
will feel about this approach, but I've used it in a few situations, and I
think it's great.

Cheers,
Bob

I think my hosting company has a setup that prevents a url like this
from working (i'm using SES).

i get a 404 page cannot be found error
http://www.myurlhere.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.home
(i does not even get to the application.cfm or index.cfm file to see the
ses code or any code for that matter.)

this works...
http://www.myurlhere.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.home
so does this...
http://www.myurlhere.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.home/a

any idea what they might have done to the server? I have to assume it is
the server preventing that url from going through, must have something
to do with the . with no ending / and faux variable

None of the links work for me. (IE6)

As a Provider, I can tell you that you need to know what the default page is in your
root directory.

In my case, when setting up a new account is to set default documents to index.cfm,
and secondary
index.htm.

My firewall will block unrecognizable extensions like home.home

SES urls support adding an extra extension at the end:

index.cfm/fuseaction/home.bob/var/value.htm

for this precise reason. I don't know what the server setup choice is, but
i know that that'll fix it.

taken from the venerable folks over at Apache, although they use extensions,
rather than a filename segment (index.html.var to signal, and index.html.en,
index.html.de, etc to hold the various versions). And all done behind the
scenes, based on the client's supplied locality.

Patrick's FA files are the same idea, although on a slighly grander scale,
and probably a better choice in this case.

That's a nice little technique to have in one's bag of tricks, Bob, and
it works pretty well for multi-language sites (insofar as handling
multi-language DSP files)

Subject: Re: Question re core file performance

If each FA in the circuit really is only displaying info, via includes
of
dsp_ files, I'd take another approach altogether. This may be very
un-fusebox, but I do it all the time to save from writing lots of
unnecessary code, and to make maintenance of the fbx_Switch much
simpler.
The idea is to use naming conventions for your dsp_ files, so that they
can
be called automatically.

Here's an example:

<cfcase value="Show">
    <cfinclude template="dsp_#attributes.theFile#.cfm">
</cfcase>

Then you'd call your fuseaction as
index.cfm?fuseaction=myCircuit.Show&theFile=News_Story.  This would
include
a template called dsp_News_Story.cfm.

Alternately, if you want to be able to call multiple fuseactions, but
only
have to write one handler for them, you could use <cfdefaultcase>, as
in:

<cfdefaultcase>
    <cftry>
        <cfinclude template="dsp_#fusebox.fuseaction#.cfm">
        <cfcatch type="MissingInclude">
            {do whatever you'd normally do in your default case here -
e.g.,
log an error and send the user to your home page}
        </cfcatch>
    </cftry>
</cfdefaultcase>

Now, you can call a fuseaction like:
index.cfm?fuseaction=myCircuit.News_Story. If you need to include 2
files,
you could just use a character to divide the FA into 2 parts (e.g.,
index.cfm?fuseaction=myCircuit.News_Story|News_Story2) and then use List
functions to include two different templates. I'm not sure how FB
purists
will feel about this approach, but I've used it in a few situations, and
I
think it's great.

Cheers,
Bob
