Ray,

Your reference to the word 'gay' caught my sympathetic attention.  Do you know anything about the social semiotics  of the word 'gay'?  Is it a self-designating term of cultural resistance, or externally constructed?

I did a quick search, but could not forbear trolling through the Religious Right attacks on the gay and lesbian communities.

The official knowledge dictionary definition only situates it as a cultural and social reference to the gay community, as opposed to 'homosexual' referencing sexuality.
