I`m not sure if we are talking at cross-purposes?!
My approach is:

1.) do every day at the same time a logswitch command to switch the curent
log to a new file
Thereby I've got a seperate log file for every day for a better
analyzing with other programs
    written in perl.

2.) do export the logfile with logexport in a, from perl readable text
format.

3.) send the text logfile to a other box for futher evaluation

4.) move the logfile from the day before (11:58 PM) from $FWDIR/log to a
other partition

Is this the same what you want to do?

best regards
Thomas
