 best option is to go with UTM-1 appliance. It has no user limit. All you

But the UTM Edge appliance can also be configured for no user limit, correct?

My great hesitation is that there is a big price difference:

* UTM-1: $7500 for the UTM-1 450
  + $1200/year for SmartDefense subscription

* UTM Edge: $2000 for the unlimited/wired version
  + $$600/year for SmartDefense subscription

That's based on the Checkpoint price list.

So obviously, the UTM-1 is a whole lot more expensive. What do I get for that extre $5500 purchase price???

Are you kidding? Ever seen the hardware? The edge is a tiny little box much like a SOHO router. And not much more CPU at that.

I would not even dream of using an Edge to do anything like AV scanning or so. Then again. I do not like to do this inside any Check Point component.
