there is a book (u can get it in pdf) with these topics:
Checkpoint NGX VPN1/FW1, Syngress
There is a chapter with the key points to upgrade to NGX.
You can upgrade first the mgmt station and keep the compatibility with
NG, so u can push from there to NG and NGX. Later u can upgrade the
software on the enforcement modules and push the policy.
if u have the option, I would recommend use new boxes, so u have the
roll back option in any moment.
