R71 SCS runs like a champ under VMware. What speed is the host and how oversubscribed is it? Another question (and common misconfiguration): what NIC emulation are you using? PCNet32 or e1000? when you defined the VM, what OS did you say it has?
Other than virtual host oversubscription, the NIC driver emulation is the biggest problem I've seen.
