We tried turning portfast on at both Switches. Didn't help
Put the FW's into the same hub and all is well. But we don't want to leave
it this way. We would like to have each into a separate switch that is then
uplinked as a fault tolerant design.

Spanning tree perhaps, you did set the switch ports to 'portfast'
and check the duplex/speed settings ?
