Whoever described it as 'ill-fated' was being kind.  :)  The file systems
on the teams' computers weren't cooperating, so some teams were able to
access the current hole's directory and other teams weren't.  That threw
every off, and we weren't able to get back on track.  I think if we had
been able to set up the computers well ahead of time and test everything,
it could have gone much more smoothly.  We ended up abandoning the
tournament, and Damian gave his very popular Quantum Superpositions talk
instead.

So, the lessons learned:
Simplify!  Fewer holes, longer time limits, and fewer competitors.
If you're depending on technology, make sure you can set it up and test it
beforehand!
Always have a backup plan!
