Ed: The external firewire devices I've seen all say to leave the drive set at the master jumper setting. I'm sure that this is the case already with this drive, so I'd suggest leaving the drive alone. Depending on where you bought the drive, it may not be partitioned and formatted for use on your Mac yet. Firewire devices can be used on different platforms, not just the Mac.
I would run a copy of disk tools and see if it sees the drive. If it does, you probably need to partition and format the drive. Just be careful that you do not partition and format the internal drive when you do it. If the case came with an AC adapter, I would use that as well just to make sure that you are getting proper power to the drive and the case. I hope this helps you out some.
