3.5 is common.... but you CAN get 5, usually.

dim your screen, turn off airport, don't use the optical drive -- on 
average, I get about 3 hours on my TiBook 400, but only when I don't do 
these things. When I don't use the optical or airport, and dim the 
screen, I get MORE than 5 hours.
