My 12" iBook combo 10.2.2/256MB/30GB does this routinely,  as well

definitely doesn't work. I just tried it and it tries to wake up and 
powers the external monitor for a second, but then the 'Book "feels" 
the magnet and immediately puts itself back to sleep.
