disk utility is the OS X equivalent of Disk First Aid. It repairs most 
directory structure errors on your hard disk. It's the first thing I 
run on a machine with random crashing problems, but I don't run it in a 
preventative measure. I may have run it once on my personal machine.. 
but I maybe not.
