Put me in on the positive side for eBay. In several thousand transactions now as seller and buyer, my wife and I have had no seller frauds and about 5-10% non-paying bidders. (That doesn't wind up being a big problem - eBay will pay back selling fees they charged if the buyer defaults, and if act they will pay up to $500 to cover your own loss if a seller defrauds you. Read the services material and use it.)
The only big problem I've run into is the darn post office. Too often things take up to three months (!) in the mail, and they won't even take a search inquiry on regular mail until six weeks have passed. (This is Canadian Post Office and shipment to the US). They are good at smashing stuff as well. I think everyone's suggestions are great for minimizing the risks, but don't jump to conclusions about fraud when the Post Office turns out to be the real baddy often enough.
