If they're a beginner, might as well start them on the right track. Both the 'books you're talking about run OSX out of the box...it's not that hard to learn. If your dad does circuit design stuff there's unix utilites he'll want, anyway.

I think it's also worth noting that the iBooks can still boot into OS 9, while the Powerbooks can't. If you're migrating from 9, this may be a major point to consider, especially if you've got applications which work best when running natively in 9 as opposed to the Classic Environment.
