I just picked up a headless 550 TiBook (GigE) and I've got some Qs. It
came with an separate intact LCD, but stripped of hinges, cables etc. and
the remaining bezel bits are pretty bent up. Otherwise the bottom half is
in pretty decent shape, battery seems solid, no dents and the paint isn't
bad at all, etc. It's a 550mhz 384/20/combo config BTW.

The 'Book boots into some flavor of X, but with a monitor attached to the
external video port I see only the second screen of an extended desktop.
I managed to find and drag over the HD icon, but for the life of me I've
had no luck so far trying to grab any open windows so I can dig down to
the monitors pane to set the d%*n thing to mirrored displays. A PRAM
reset didn't help.

1) So how the heck do I do it? Can I change the primary display at the
Open Firmware prompt? cmd-opt-O-F does produce an OF prompt on the
monitor . . . Any other suggestions beyond keep trying with the
blind-click-and-drag frustrator? I haven't yet tried booting from an OS9
CD, perhaps 9 is smart enough to know there is no internal display
attached!

2) Is it a practical proposition for me to look for a complete but
cracked-LCD display and use my intact LCD to make one complete display?
The repair manual has no repair procedure for the display itself, module
replacement the only included procedure. The front part around the LCD
itself appears to be glued on, Lewin Edwards suggested to someone using
heat (a la Palm V) to soften the glue but I fear damaging the LCD. Any
further suggestions anyone?

3) Which displays fit the 550/667 GigE TiBook? I've come across different
infos, some say any pre-DVI display will work, while others say only a
GigE display can be used. Can I use an original TiBook display? Any
authoritative details greatly appreciated!

I paid $475 for this lil' mess only because I can't afford to spend the
$1000+ a GigE TiBook costs these days, with the idea I might be able to
put together a complete TiBook for substantially less than market price.

4) But is it even worth bothering trying to fix this sow's ear? Should I
just go with plan 'B', break it and sell the parts, then wait patiently
for another bargain (but complete) TiBook to come along some other fine
day? Mind you, I have no legit need right now for a TiBook anyhow, which
explains my 'can't afford' comment. :-)

TIA,

Dan K
