Because I have DSL at home and high speed network at work I never have a need to dial up for mail. Yesterday my DSL connection went dead (looks like a line card at the CO switch has gone kaput) and I wanted to dial up to get mail. I can't even "see" the internal modem as an available port in the Modem Control Panel in OS 9 nor does it show up in the available connection options in OS X. It's vanished (though I know it was working when I got the PowerBook in July of 02). So it appears that it's a hardware problem. I haven't disassembled this thing to check, but is the modem on the motherboard or is it something that we can replace quickly? I don't want to be without my PowerBook in the middle of a school term, so I'm hoping it's a simple card change, not a mobo replacement (or PowerBook replacement).
