Thank you Adam. I see if i can make the machine work with your tips.So far however, the machine doesn't start up from CD, even while pressing "C".
Have you tried resetting the PRAM? That usually clears the setting that defines which drive you have selected as the boot disk... To do it, hold down <Apple>-<Option>-<P>-<R> all at the same time after you hear the startup chime. You LCD will probably light up, then it will restart again. Let it "cycle" twice (wait for the chimes to sound two times) before you let go of the keys.
Alternatively, you can hold down the <Option> key as soon as you hear the startup chimes. The PowerBook will scan all connected hard disks to find system folders and display them on the screen as "buttons." Click on the icon represeting the disk you want to start with, and press <return> or hit the arrow button. (By the way, this is a handy trick if you want to switch your boot drive at startup but didn't change the startup disk before you shut down your Mac the last time. It's especially useful if you've got a bunch of external FireWire disks or expansion bay modules.)
That should get you booted, at least. Then change your startup disk properly by using the Startup Disk control panel.
