Well, I have had a similar problem with my iBook in the past, which was solved by using a magnet to find the polarity of the magnet in the bottom half of the case, then 'charging' the latch. I have quite a strong magnet, and this worked perfectly for me, never any troubles. Jim, this might be more useful to you, as I'm sure William will still be under the first 12 months of Apple Care - Let THEM fix it.
