You actually need something that conducts heat well, not metal that stays cool. Steel doesn't conduct heat very well if I remember correctly, so it isn't the best idea. Aluminum seems to be used in the heatsink plates in the Lombard and Pismo, but copper is a very good heat conductor. A lot of heatsinks you can buy for PCs these days use copper as the material as there is a lot of heat needing to be dissipated. Since you have to build one yourself, I would use copper.

On the thickness, that doesn't apply nearly as much as the surface area ratio (the amount of surface area on the chip versus the surface area of the rest of the plate in contact with the Keyboard/etc). Try to build one that can cover the entire chip if possible, and have as much contact with the chip as possible. Then make it come in contact with the existing heatsink plate with as much surface area as reasonable. This will ensure that heat transfer from the chip to the rest of the system goes smoothly.

I need suggestions on what material and thickness the cooling metalplate

the Powerbook Wallstreet model ( I have a rev. 2), should be. I just
bought one second hand and it seems to be missing from the package and I
have to make my own. I have access to a toolshop, so it shouldn't be a
problem, but I could use some info if you have one or have knowledge of
how the real thing is supposed to look .

Steel comes to mind as being the most "cool" metal I know of. Is that a
good material or should I use something like brass or some other material
instead? I'm contemplating 2-4 mm thickness, but if you guys have any
real info, I'd be glad to hear about it.
