And if you're doing a long slow download the HD will be active so it won't go to sleep 
though the screen may go blank.  I've got my PB set to sleep at 5 minutes.

I don't think that's correct.  I used to use a program many years ago that worked much 
like Extensions Manager except that it also showed how much RAM each Control Panels 
and Extension used.  Some Control Panels are really just programs that run but some of 
them do load into memory upon booting.
