Hello G3 Powerbook gurus,

As a recent new owner of a PB G3 (Lombard, Mac OS 9.2), I've been on the lookout for and read several related FAQ lists, but still had a question or two about this new computing environment for me.

1. Energy saver control panel. I've always set the sleep setting to "never" on my various PowerMacs, not wanting to cause problems with longer WWW downloads, etc., getting by with just a screen saver. All that's changed now, particularly because of the occasional need to conserve battery power. Is it still possible, or advisable to set the Energy saver control panel to "never?"

On battery you definitely want it to sleep in a short time. You probably aren't going to be doing any long downloads on battery. The Energy Saver control panel has separate settings for battery and AC. I would still let the screen, drive and system sleep on AC. A Powerbook is a very dense collection of circuitry and while it hopefully won't ever overheat it still tends to run hotter than a desktop. Letting it sleep when it's not busy is a good idea. It shouldn't sleep while you are downloading.

Sometimes I've run into problems where it won't wake from screen sleep. In those cases where I can identify the problem it has turned out that it was simply a program hanging and it only happened to have the screen asleep when it happened. When I have a persistent problem like this I do set the screen to not sleep. Then I have some clue what happened.

2. Since I notice now an additional trackpad control panel, is the mouse control panel still necessary, or should it be de-activated in extensions manager?

It doesn't hurt to leave it active. It just controls the settings, the actual part that is using the settings is built into the OS.
