Sorry for the confusion...I meant DVD +R...also the +RW's....Funny thing...Both computers will play home burned DVD-R but NOT the DVD-RW format. Yes, by desktop, I meant a Phillips set top burner that uses the + format dvd's...also an Apex player along w/a Polaroid 7" screen portable player. Also, if I put a burned DVD-R in the external LaCie, it plays perfectly...Likewise a -RW plays w/out a problem..
Regards,
Mike

what exactly is a DVD + ?

As I understand, it is the format for burning to DVD's. I was told by Apple that the Powerbooks and other Macs with Superdrives can only burn to DVD - vs DVD +.

Here is an article on this subject:

It will probably explain the difference better than I can.

then we would be talking about a DVD+R or DVD+RW. merely saying "DVD+" is nowhere near sufficient. doesn't even specify that we're even talking about writable or rewritable media.

some early DVD-ROM drives don't like writable (or rewritable) media at all - be it DVD-R or DVD+R. others just don't like DVD+R or DVD-R but will work with only one or the other.

in a drive like that from the Pismo or early iMac DVs, i'm not at all surprised if a burned DVD(+/-)R(W) disk doesn't mount - these drives were manufactured before DVD-R was was an established standard, much less DVD+R.

you may find better results if you just try a different brand of media or it may just not work.

Just a quick question...Pismo 400 10.3.2 with DVD drive part # M7931 (DRN-8080B) will recognize that a DVD + has been inserted....It will bring the DVD icon to the desk top, DVD player will start then nothing happens...Nothing shows up under chapters, title etc...When I hit play, etc. I get the Not Permitted message... This also happens when I put the DVD in my Graphite iMac SE 400 10.3.2.....I have a LaCie external burner hooked to it and get the same thing....Is there anything I can do about this??? The DVD's all play perfectly in my desktop players..

playing DVDs from an external drive are probably not going to work at all - so the fact that you get Prohibited when playing from that surprises me not at all.

you'll have to better define "desktop players" to make that useful in this puzzle - you mean desktop as in Powermac or PC, or do you mean SET TOP box - such as the DVD Player you plug into your TV?
