The crack is right near the display release. On another note, I found
a 20gb hard drive at ecost:

I googled the mfg. part number and it turns out it's a Toshiba:

Am I correct in assuming this will be compatible with the pismo?

Any 2.5" drive 12mm or less will work in a Pismo.
If it's cracked in front, make sure the battery charge board is seated correctly. I think you mentioned that you looked at connections, but sometimes it's worth the effort to unplug/replug everything.

And one more thing, check out Smartdisk.com, look in the refurbished section. You can get a 30GB drive in a Firewire case for $90. That may give you a case to use with the old drive, too.
