When I was still running Jaguar on both the G3/800 iBook and the G4/800, the difference wasn't all that noticeable. Installing Panther made it a whole 'nother story. I'd love a new G4 iBook... but can't justify the expense when the G3 serves me just fine for a portable.

The speed difference here is largely attributable to the G4, but the
PowerBook also offers much more robust caching.

The iBook drive will be both smaller and slower than the G4. The system bus
is probably also faster in the G4.


That's my point. This is a tough comparison to make for that reason.
If you could boot a G3/800 iBook from a firewire drive (Oxford 911 chip),
I'll wager the difference with the G4 would diminish to some extent.
