The speed difference here is largely attributable to the G4, but the PowerBook also offers much more robust caching.

That's my point. This is a tough comparison to make for that reason.
If you could boot a G3/800 iBook from a firewire drive (Oxford 911 chip),
I'll wager the difference with the G4 would diminish to some extent.
