You're much better off paying for one than "renting" one from your cable company. A few years ago they were selling for $3-400 and the technology was changing, so buying them wasn't a good idea, but now they are less than $100 and relatively standardized, so I'd definitely buy one with the features that you need/want.


"NAT" (Network Address Translation) is a basic feature, although not always called that. Almost all of them will let you connect multiple computers to the 'net.

I depends on what kind or router you get. If I were buying one, I would
get one with "built in" wireless capability. There are a ton available.
Airport is one, but on the pricey side. Unless you have to route
AppleTalk, save some $$ and get a Linksys or such.

Or unless you also want the USB printer port and a dialup modem and ease of use, in which case Airport Extreme is a nifty choice.


But yes, if you don't need/want those things (nor AppleTalk), Linksys and others are a good, cheaper option.
