Last summer I bought a used G-3 Lombard (ApplePowermac G3/400 192/6gig/DVD/Ethernet
14"Color Display
Dual Firewire & USB) and I love it. Problem is, recently it wouldn't boot properly.
When I turned it on, the screen would stay black or sometimes would flash grey for
awhile, like it was beginning to start up, but if it did boot all the way, it would
lock up; mostly it just wouldn't get beyond the black screen. I could hear the motor
run, but...

So, knowing little about the innards, I took it in to the authourized Mac service
center. I've been told I need a new processor card ($419) and some cleaning up done
with the software; the price I'm looking at is $600.

I love the portability, am not overly into graphics/video, although I do use the DVD.
It's never been enhanced and I run 9.2. We also have a G4 desktop in the house. I
use it mostly for writing, internet and email and DVD.

I contacted a local place that is willing to install some stuff if I get it outside of
what is "authorized." I originally took it in, thinking to get the black screen thing
taken care of, have some memory added and get it up to OS X potential. The Apple guy
says I'd need a new hard drive as well to make it OS X compatable.

So, now I'm wondering if I can just get it up and running for less than $600. I'm a
handy person, but have never pulled open a computer to install memory or anything.
I'd be game, if I got good directions. I'm also wondering about salvaging documents
that I've got in the computer. Most of it is backed up, but some is not.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
