Think I figured it out. . .
I completely removed Safari from my HDD by using "find" and moving all Safari files to trash. I then restarted, used find once more searching for any Safari files. Nothing. . .so after that, I went to Apples website, downloaded Safari and ran the installer again. This time, with no Safari installed, it automatically imported all of my favorites from IE into the bookmarks! I still don't like the way it's laid out but hey, at least I got that far!
