Thanks for the thought and time, But I fear it doesn't speak to the question. A potential 'Age' challenge to some, I should think.
DOT-MATRIX in general, and ImageWriter specifically, refer to the earliest methods of printing from Computers, most closely resembling 'Typewriters', (also, I fear, an 'Age Challenging' concept), that use ink-impregnated 'Ribbon' to produce the 'Output'.
The 'Ribbon', and the paper being the ONLY recurring 'overhead expense'; This method is far-and-away the UNCHALLENGED format for Text reproduction where cost is the concern. Pennies to Dollars by comparison.
In addition, the simplicity, solidness and resulting Reliability of the 'System', reduces ALL other Formats to 'Junk' status, comparatively speaking.
I STILL use, on a daily basis, the first ImageWriter II I purchased just leaving college, (in the early months of their Production Run), with the only repair ever required, an infrequent replacement of the carriage belt, (the present one some seven years old.
I submit, this very durability and use-expense are the prime factor for their discontinued Production/Support.
I have two, and for that reason continue to run a PERFORMA. I would sooner consider giving-up my G5 than both my IWs.
In my +60 yrs. they are the single most satisfying purchases I've ever made, of any kind. Hands Down! And, IMHO, the essence of APPLE'S BEST.
It would, though, be SO advantageous, to be able to Drive them out of PANTHER/CLASIC; And I'm certain a PROGRAM?) written to that end would sell to the writers enrichment. (some work-around of a Driver out there, maybe?)?
