So why does it work with the OS 9 decoder ring in these machines? Is the
decoder also a graphic booster item?

None of the answers this summer regarding playing DVDs on Powerbooks seem
to make much sense. There seem to be some information missing.

I asked earlier why VLC and DVDplayer can play mounted DVD images fine
with full screen support, but with .vob files from the same disc it fails
completely. If these are reburnt to disc, they work again.

Why? If there is no hardware decoding as some have suggested, on what
level does the MPEG2 software decoding work and why does it fail in some
wrappings to decode MPEG2 effectively? I do have a hard time believing
that there is no hardware decoding active in some models under OS X as
the difference in performance results have been so staggering.

I also wonder why DVDplayer can't play over S-Video at all (Blank grey
picture) on my Powerbook G4 / 400, but VLC can. S-video worked already
with my PDQ.....
