more than I would pay for an older used TiBook with no warranty. I just wonder if I could use my regular Airport card instead of the AE? I'm currently using my Sawtooth as a "software basestation" for my Icebook, so I have no need for AE as I wouldn't be

My guess is that it's integrated on the motherboard. Think of it as being somewhat future proofed that way. You can sell your original airport card for quite a bit of money now anyway.
