I have found the USB controller on the 12" G4 (I have the 1GHz model) to be picky. It works great with most of my USB peripherals, but with an external hard drive is would write at full speed, but freeze and eventually lock the entire machine if I tried to read.
I replaced that USB2.0 case with a combo USB 2.0/FireWire case that one works fine through both interfaces. The moral of the story is that at least my 12" PB is picky about what goes into the USB port. Why not connect the two computers with an ethernet crossover cable, or if the 1400 has no ethernet card, moce the files to the iMac and then connect the iMac and 12" G4 with an ethernet crossover cable. Probably your easiest bet.
